Bocci  - The Unofficial PBDA  rules

If you’re a stickler about official rules go ahead and seek them out. You’ll be reading about, pallino, giro, punto, baci, raffa and volo, just to name a few, for about 14 pages. I think you get the point. So we’ve ‘Readers Digested’ the game, like we’ll do with other games that get too technical. Basically you need a fairly flat playing surface for the court. The court size can vary depending on your mood. We mark out a court 25' x 50' at the beach.

You can play individually or with teams. Each player should have the same color balls, typically four but no more. You’ll need a target ball (pallino), no, no please don’t start with those hard words! With a distinct color white would be the most common since the bocci balls are colored.

How you start is up to you but the first team to throw should place the target ball by tossing or rolling it onto the court. The object then is to get your balls as close to the target as possible by throwing rolling or whatever one ball per turn alternating turns. Once everyone has exhausted their balls the round is over. The player or team with the closest ball to the object, wins the round and scores a point. If per chance a ball is touching the object ball that scores an extra point. Players then retrieve their balls and start another round, winner of the previous round launches the pallino (oops) from the opposite side of the court if possible. The game is to nine (so you won’t have to take of both shoes).

Penalties are subject to how many beers you’ve downed, but you can’t step over the line when you throw, if you do your ball must be removed from the court, unless it’s so far out play that it won’t interfere with other balls and if that’s the case take a water break!
